Let’s Be Clear

Beyond the introduction.

A television series can give a group an audience before it has a catalogue. The harder task comes afterwards: making songs people return to when the judges, edits and competition are gone. That is the context worth bringing to SZN4’s “Let’s Be Clear”, a two-minute-forty-eight-second cut from their debut album, I Fear….

Aaliyah Rose, Donzell Taggart, Cameron Goode and Katie Roeder came together on Netflix’s Building the Band, where singers chose collaborators by listening before meeting face to face. It is an origin story with a useful musical premise: chemistry has to begin with what each person hears in the others. For a vocal group, the continuing challenge is to preserve those individual identities while giving the listener a reason to hear them as one.

The band’s own promotion of “Let’s Be Clear” includes a duet excerpt. That is a revealing choice of introduction. It puts the exchange between singers in the foreground and offers a more intimate route into the group than its television biography. The useful question to take into the recording is how those voices share the song: who carries a phrase, who answers, and what changes when another voice enters.

For this edition, the track is the starting point. Follow it into I Fear…, then return to the performance clips. A debut deserves that movement between the individual song and the larger proposition. SZN4’s television story explains how they found one another; their records are where the next chapter has to be written.
